Riley: Signing C Whiteside top priority

Is Bosh Done Forever?

As Windhorst notes, Bosh would still receive his money and the Heat would have a large chunk paid by insurance, but the Heat can't wipe that contract from the salary-cap ledger until Bosh has been out for at least a year.

Wade, 34, is also a free agent for the second straight summer and said Monday that he doesn't expect negotiations with the Heat to be as tenuous as they were last summer before the sides came together on a one-year, $20 million contract.

Sure, there are a lot of question marks when it comes to the status of Chris Bosh and his health, but let's put that aside and look at the pure nature of who's in and who's out on this team. I don't know if Miami will want to match that or not.

Retaining Whiteside will be Miami's top priority in free agency this summer, Heat President Pat Riley said in his end-of-season remarks Wednesday. "As a brother and a friend of his, to see that he's going through what he's going through - I've talked to him numerous times and there's no way I can even say that I understand what he's going through". A player like now-free agent Hassan Whiteside, for example. It was a much better finish than what they accomplished in the 2014-15 season, which was the first year they had to play without LeBron James. The 7-footer, who posted 14.2 points, 11.8 rebounds and a league-leading 3.7 blocks per game this season, should be able to command max deals from other teams, with the Miami Heat reportedly uninterested to hand the young center a max contract this summer, according to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald. The Heat would love to have Bosh back, this is clear.

Riley described Bosh's condition as "a haymaker" that rocked the team and could have a major impact on how the Heat move forward into free agency. So right now, that's where we are.

"I met with him and asked if he likes chocolate in his gift basket or go to Parrot Jungle or sightseeing tour of Miami", Riley said.

The question becomes, again, who can Miami surround them with. "We'll see. I hope it'll be fruitful for us". He is in the final year of the said agreement which makes him an unrestricted free agent this July.
