Springer HR, 4 RBIs as Astros end Boston's 5-game win streak

Houston Astros' Marwin Gonzalez follows through on an RBI single during the fifth inning of a baseball game against the Boston Red Sox in Boston, Friday, May 13, 2016.

"It's the work that we put in every day".

They are on pace to score more than 957 runs, which would rank as the third-highest total in franchise history behind only the 2003 team (961) and the 1950 club led by Ted Williams (1,027).

Houston won a 16-inning, five-hour, nine-minute marathon at home on Wednesday afternoon, then flew to Boston and hit town as a 14-21 team in last place in its division.

Knuckleballer Steven Wright struggled with his grip in the soggy conditions but credited the Astros with capitalizing on their opportunities. The Athletics understand that Gray is just one player and they could acquire 3 or 4 good prospects with high potentials for just one pitcher. Sure, they were facing MLB's most productive offense, but allowing 40 runs and eight homers over three games just won't get it done. They laid off some knuckleballs that were down.

Wright pitched into the fifth, when Houston scored four to tie it at 5-all.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said there was concern before the game as to how the weather might affect Wright's outing. "We've been in a stretch where we haven't really taxed the bullpen".

This offense has been historically good, and we thought it was time to check on what was making it such a lethal weapon. He went 6-7 with a 3.22 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 125 2/3 innings.

Phillies 7, Braves 4: Cameron Rupp hit a three-run double with two outs in the top of the 10th inning, dropping Atlanta to a big league-worst 8-25, including 2-17 at home. Barnes (2-2) took the loss.

In each of his first two career starts the 24-year-old rookie was able to keep his team in the game, despite being prone to serving up the long ball, finishing five efficient frames in each. Shields (2-5) allowed seven hits and one walk, Brandon Maurer pitched the eighth inning and Fernando Rodney had the ninth for his 11th save. "They ended up with five runs out of it with the two big home runs". Bradley added an RBI double, a wild pitch brought in another run and Mookie Betts had an RBI single.

George Springer homered and drove in four runs for Houston (15-22), which lost Thursday's opener 11-1.

In the midst of a career-long 19 game hitting streak, Bradley is hitting.

Red Sox: LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (right knee ligament) had his fourth rehab start was pushed to Saturday when Triple-A Pawtucket's game against Gwinnett was postponed because of rain.

Astros: RHP Collin McHugh (4-3, 5.50) has won his last three starts.

The string of double-figure runs came to an end Friday, but the Red Sox' bats weren't exactly quieted - they still pounded out 11 hits and scored six runs, which, on most nights, would be plenty enough with which to win.

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5-4, while the Los Angeles Angels and the Dodgers went down 5-2 and 4-3 against the St Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets respectively.
