Minnesota picks Mark Coyle from Syracuse as AD finalist

Mark Coyle steps down as Syracuse athletic director

Syracuse announced Coyle's departure, saying he is taking a position at Minnesota for "family reasons".

Mark Coyle's tenure as Syracuse University's director of athletics is over after less than 11 months.

Mark Coyle has resigned as Syracuse athletic director to take a job at Minnesota, the university announced Wednesday.

The Syracuse athletics department's accomplishments during Coyle's time included both the men's and women's basketball teams advancing to the Final Fours of their respective NCAA Tournaments this April. I thought he was really good.

Minnesota acknowledged in a statement released Wednesday that Coyle is the lone finalist for its AD opening, saying he was on campus Wednesday and meeting with the search committee, coaches and other officials.

Coyle's experience with the Gophers came as an associate AD for external relations from 2001 to 2005. "It's shocking. I like him a lot and I thought he was doing great".

He fired former head coach Scott Shafer and hired Dino Babers. But Taylor, the deputy athletic director at the University of Iowa, was not a finalist for the job according to a source on Tuesday, May 10. He was responsible for managing marketing, sales, athletic communications, the ticket office and licensing.
