Larry Wilmore Defends Calling Obama 'My Nigga' at Correspondents' Dinner

Larry Wilmore didn't waste time in addressing his critics for the comedian's remarks at the White House Correspondents Dinner Saturday.

While President Obama's speech at the White House Correspondents' Dinner was received pretty well with the crowd, Nerd Prom host Larry Wilmore's monologue pretty much went over like a lead balloon. Wilmore, who is black and, at 54, the same age as Obama, said words didn't do justice to the idea that he could live at the same time a black man could be leader of the free world.

Larry Wilmore has spent the past 48 hours taking heat from pundits over what some naysayers viewed as an uneven-and even problematic-performance at President Obama's final White House Correspondents' Dinner. "I don't believe I said that".

"I'm confident that Mr. Wilmore used the word by design. He said that he appreciated the spirit of the sentiments that Mr. Wilmore expressed", Earnest said.

A lot of people, both black and white, disagreed with Wilmore using the word to describe the president, including Piers Morgan.

Wilmore knew what he was getting into with the word he used, which necessarily provokes a heated and divisive response.

"President Obama also over the years has shown himself to be rather adept at delivering a speech that consists primarily of one- or two-liners, and the president enjoys that opportunity". Numerous comments on Twitter were asking "Is the n-word what the American public need to hear associated to Obama's last months in office, especially given the racial rollercoaster the entire country has been on since Obama took office and evident by the treatment of him?" He added, "That's disgusting I would never do that...." "Are you saying that I called the president a "n****r"?" He also called out former CNN anchor Piers Morgan for using the latter term in his Mail Online column: "Piers, you did not properly conjugate that slur".
