Walton Named Lakers New Head Coach

The team's official announcement indicated the former Lakers forward will be the historic franchise's 26th head coach, succeeding Byron Scott-another former L.A. player-who was sacked after posting a 17-65 mark in the 2015-16 campaign, which was the worst single-season record in Lakers history.

The 36-year-old had become a hot coaching commodity after?posting a 39-4 record - including a record 24-0 start - as the Warriors' interim coach this season while Kerr was recovering from complications stemming from two offseason back surgeries.

Warriors Coach Steve Kerr confirmed that the reigning National Basketball Association champions had told Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak they could meet Walton following their series win over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.

After his playing career ended in 2013, he worked briefly for the Lakers' television network as a broadcaster, and for their D-League team as a player development coach. A lot of names have started falling into the mix including David Blatt, Luke Walton, Derek Fisher, and even John Calipari from the University of Kentucky. The franchise club has announced on Friday late night that it is going to appoint Luke Walton as its new head coach.

The Lakers are hoping that Luke Walton can connect with these younger players on this roster and make the players inside that locker room more connected with one another, especially after the disastrous D'Angelo Russell/Nick Young incident.

Golden Warriors Coach Steve Kerr talks with Tim Kawakami and Marcus Thompson II on Warriors Plus/Minus, Apr. 29, 2016.

The Post had been the first to report Knicks president Phil Jackson had spoken with Walton via phone about the head coaching position at the Garden.

Earlier this month, the Lakers were widely castigated in the media and in league circles for dragging their feet on a Scott decision and missing out on highly regarded former Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau. Obviously, that's not the role I've had before but this is the situation our team is in so that's kind of the direction this has to go.

LOS ANGELES -Luke Walton is coming home to rebuild the Los Angeles Lakers.

He will have tons of young talent in Russell, Clarkson and Randle plus a top draft pick. During his time there, he was part of two championship teams.

Walton, who got a multiyear contract, will join the Lakers after the Warriors' playoff run.
