Cruz taps Fiorina to serve as running mate

Her stewardship of Hewlett-Packard allowed Fiorina to bolster her campaign with the distinction of being the first woman to run a Fortune 50 business.

The Texas senator told the crowd what he looked for in a running mate: he looked for strength, resolve, character and an understanding of the economy.

Ted Cruz will tap Carly Fiorina to be his running mate if he is the Republican Party's nominee for president, NBC News confirms. It came two days ahead of the California Republican Party's convention in Burlingame, where Cruz, Fiorina, Trump and Ohio Gov. John Kasich are all scheduled to speak. He now has 954 of the 1,237 delegates he needs to secure the nomination.

The Texas senator, who has repeatedly said "Hoosiers" - a 1980s flick about an underdog IN high school basketball team - is one of his favorite movies, was IN the the gym where the movie was filmed.

He took swipes at Clinton, saying she supported global trade agreements and cited the recent move by air-conditioning giant Carrier to outsource more than 2,000 jobs from IN to Mexico.

"I have seen her day in, day out, on the campaign bus, going from stop to stop to stop that she is careful, she is measured, she is serious, she doesn't get overly excited, she doesn't get rattled by whatever is thrown at her", Cruz said. Assuming the eventual Democratic nominee is Hillary Clinton - and that Cruz somehow manages to get the GOP nomination - a female running mate could be of benefit to Cruz.

"He's been in lots of fights". After her Mary Poppins moment, Ms Fiorina went on to talk about guns, or rather her devotion to the second amendment and the right to bear arms. "And he has won those fights". When she announced her bid for presidency in May 2015, her former HP colleagues shuddered at the idea of Fiorina managing anything, let alone the entire country.

"Carly is bright, knowledgeable, brings great financial expertise and she's a woman", said Gary Aminoff, the Los Angeles County co-chair of the Cruz campaign.

Cruz no longer has a chance to win enough delegates before the convention and is relying on a strategy of preventing Trump from reaching the magic number of 1,237 delegates as well.

"Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are two sides of the same coin", she said.

In an Associated Press-GfK poll conducted in December 2015, Republican voters were more likely to say they had a favourable than an unfavourable view of Fiorina by a 47 per cent to 20 per cent margin, with 32 per cent unable to give a rating.

Ms Fiorina, who has never held elected office, endorsed Mr Cruz after she dropped out of the Republican field in February. Cruz said, as he described the criteria he used in assessing a potential vice presidential pick.

"The American people deserve a real choice in November", Cruz said during the announcement. Trump said in a Rolling Stone article last September.

Ted Cruz is joined by former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina during a rally in Indianapolis on Wednesday.

"Everyone of us remembers the grace, the class, the élan at which Carly responded", he said. She pillories Mrs Clinton for staying married to Bill Clinton in spite of his well-documented adulterous escapades, which, as a woman, she can do without being called sexist.

"If you are a Democrat, an independent or a thoughtful Republican, you know that their approach is not going to build an America where we increase opportunity or decrease inequality", Clinton said of the GOP candidates.
