Pop superstar Prince dies suddenly at 57

Prince at all star game

Many of his songs topped the pop charts, and he won an Oscar for the original song score to the classic film, "Purple Rain".

It's been called the greatest Super Bowl halftime show ever - that time that Prince belted out "Purple Rain" amidst a driving Florida rainstorm. The game took place in Miami at Dolphin Stadium, and though the Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears were duking out, all that mattered was the mind at work on stage. The score was 16-10 in favor of the Colts when Prince took the field at halftime.

Prince provided fans with epic performances, head-scratching personal protests and a soundtrack for every emotion, both carnal and spiritual, over a career that spanned four decades.

The setlist also featured Creedence Clearwater Revival's hit "Proud Mary", fellow Minnesotan Bob Dylan's folk tune "All Along the Watchtower", Foo Fighters song "Best of You", and finished, fittingly, with his own "Purple Rain". If there's a more cathartic moment in rock history, I don't know it. The whole country was singing along. Last week, he was hospitalized in IL with the flu following an emergency plane landing.

The legendary musician's publicist confirmed his death at age 57 Thursday in Minnesota.
