Staten Island Tech among nation's best high schools, report says

New Jersey has five of the country's 100 best public high schools, according to annual rankings conducted by U.S. News and World report.

Academy of Art Careers and Technology in the Washoe County School District was the top-ranked high school in the state, followed by Galena High School (Reno), Advanced Technologies Academy (Las Vegas) and West Career & Technical Academy.

Among other area school rankings, the San Diego International Studies program at San Diego High School was 22nd in California and 191st in the nation; Westview High in Torrey Highland was 38th and 266th, respectively; Torrey Pines High in Carmel Valley, 43rd and 284th; Del Norte High in 4S Ranch, 50th and 334th; and La Jolla High, 54th and 355th. Then, U.S. News factored in how effectively schools educated their least-advantaged students - those of black, Hispanic and low-income backgrounds. U.S. News and World Report said it changed its methodology this year to include graduation rates. Overall, Princeton ranked 10th in the state and 192nd in the country.

In all, 499 California schools received the magazine's gold or silver medals (which come with no monetary or other reward), compared with 556 previous year.

Tech is one of nine special admission high schools in the city; students are admitted based on their score on the Specialized High School Admissions Test given each fall.

BASIS Scottsdale and BASIS Tucson North, the most established institutions in the BASIS.ed network, have also been named the #4 and #6 STEM schools in the nation by U.S News, based on students' participation and success in Advanced Placement science and math tests. All three schools, however, failed to make the list. BASIS Tucson North was #3 nationally, the #2 charter school nationally, and the #2 high school in Arizona.

High schoolers in Ohio must also receive instruction in economics and financial literacy to graduate, according to the Ohio Department of Education.
