We have been saying this: "Zika is guilty until proven innocent".

The mosquito-borne Zika virus now circulating in more than 30 countries has infected at least nine pregnant women in the United States - resulting in one baby born with a telltale birth defect, two miscarriages, and two voluntary abortions, according to federal health officials. But the question of whether the infection in pregnant women is connected to brain defects in their babies has remained open.

The two new cases are in addition to Iowa's first case, announced last week.

More information will be available in the future from a new CDC registry for US pregnant women with confirmed Zika virus infection and their infants. Two others made a decision to terminate their pregnancies.

"As of today, 147 cases have been reported to CDC".

The time period in which Zika virus is a threat to fetuses is not yet known. They can monitor for complications through blood tests and ultrasounds, though there is no cure or specific treatment for Zika. Previously, 3 Oregonians had confirmed cases of Zika since 2014.

In another, a woman in her 30s had traveled to a Zika-affected area when she was about 12 weeks pregnant. The agency hopes those numbers will decrease due to its travel advisory. The report highlighted two cases in which women contracted Zika after having sex with symptomatic men.

According to Medical Entomologist, Dr. Philip Armstrong, at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) the mosquito species that is primarily responsible for transmission of Zika virus to people is not found in Connecticut. Two women had abortions. "We did not ... anticipate that we would see this many sexually transmitted cases of Zika", Frieden said.

A second report published Friday by the CDC focused on 14 instances of suspected sexual transmission among women who had sexual contact with a male who had travelled to an area of Zika virus transmission.

Zika symptoms include fever, rash and joint pain, although four of five people infected with the virus have no symptoms.

Researchers have said that Zika infections during early pregnancy, when brain development is rapid, may potentially be more closely linked with brain development problems than infections later in pregnancy.

The CDC is following 10 other pregnant women.

Men with a pregnant sex partner who live in or have traveled to an area of active Zika virus transmission should abstain from sex or use condoms during sex (vaginal, anal, or oral) for the duration of the pregnancy. Brazil has confirmed more than 580 cases of microcephaly and considers majority to be related to Zika infections in the mothers.

"We have the potential for hundreds of thousands of cases in Puerto Rico", CDC Director Tom Frieden said. The other part is the northern part of South America with countries like Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela.
