The two became neighbors a decade ago, and not long after, Farook introduced Marquez to Islam.

Officials also accused Marquez of "defrauding immigration authorities by entering into a sham marriage with a member of Farook's family".

The men purchased firearms, tactical gear and ammunition in anticipation of these attacks, according to the affidavit.

The three-count criminal complaint against Marquez provides the most detailed account yet from authorities of the deadliest terror attack on the United States since September 11, 2001.

On Thursday, Enrique Marquez, who provided the assault rifles that was used to kill 14 people in a massacre in San Bernardino, Calif., this month, was arrested and charged with crimes including conspiring to support terrorists.

The partial transcript of the 911 call also reveals that Marquez apparently mentioned suicide. Why do you feel like you want to kill yourself? "What's going on?" the operator asks. "He did the San Bernardino shooting...the [expletive] used my gun in the shooting". Farook allegedly planned to move among stopped vehicles, shooting into them, while Marquez shot into vehicles from a position on a nearby hillside.

And Marquez's family did not learn of the union until he had checked into Harbor UCLA Medical Center after the shooting, according to court papers.

Surveillance footage showed Marquez clocking in at work at about 7:00 a.m., the documents state.

In his first court appearance, which lasted 10 minutes, Enrique Marquez Jr.,...

No plea was entered and he was ordered held until a bail hearing Monday in U.S. District Court.

Known as mild-mannered and impressionable, Marquez was undergoing an unnerving transformation behind the scenes, according to the affidavit. KTLA interviewed him earlier this year when he saved a friend's dog that had been bitten by a rattlesnake. He and Farook would discuss the Tablighi Jamaat, a proselytizing movement that rejects violence. The men watched videos produced by al-Shabab, the Islamist terrorist group affiliated with al-Qaida, and read Inspire, al-Qaida's English-language magazine. Marquez also purchased explosives at this time - "in furtherance of his and Farook's plans to create bombs and commit mass killings", according to the affidavit. The affidavit said Farook was registered as a student there from about 2004 to 2010.

Attorney E. Martin Estrada, a former federal prosecutor in Los Angeles, said the admissibility of Marquez's statements to the FBI will likely be challenged by defense lawyers, but if the statements are allowed in court, they give prosecutors a very strong case because of corroborating evidence.

Alternatively, there was the rush-hour highway plan, which was to begin with a series of pipe bomb explosions to bring traffic to a standstill.

Marquez bought a pair of AR-15 rifles from a sporting goods store that were planned to be use in these abandoned attacks. The combination of Farook's involvement with the Dar Al Uloom Al Islamiyah Mosque and Malik's attendance at al-Huda would have indicated, at minimum, an urgent need for comprehensive screening. Marquez allegedly told investigators they chose a specific section of the 91 Freeway because there were no exits and it would increase the number of targets, according to the news release.

Few at Morgan's Tavern believed Marquez's claim that he and a Russian émigré had tied the knot, recalled Nick Rodriguez, once a regular at the pub.

Around 2011, Farook and Marquez "began planning to commit terrorist acts in the Southern California area", the document says, specifically a community college and a freeway.

He said they didn't see much of each other after it unraveled, though he deepened his connection with the Farook family, marrying the Russian sister of the wife of Farook's brother past year. Chernykh offered Marquez $200 a month in return for the marriage, the affidavit said.

The complaint indicates Marquez and M.C. lived at different addresses, M.C. with her boyfriend, the father of her child.
