BYU names former QB Detmer as offensive coordinator

Oregon State linebackers coach Ilaisa Tuiaki is on his way to BYU, where he will join former Beavers Defensive Coordinator Kalani Sitake's staff. Sitake has replaced the departed Bronco Mendenhall as the coach of the Cougars.

From Sitake's statement, released by the university.

Former Brigham Young quarterback Ty Detmer was hired Thursday as offensive coordinator at his alma mater without any previous college coaching experience. "Each has an exceptional football mind and a real passion to help our young men, to succeed on and off the football field".

Detmer is still BYU's all-time leader in passing yards (15,031) and touchdown passes (121).

Detmer played 14 seasons (1992-2005) with five teams in the National Football League after being drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1992.

According to the Austin American-Statesman's Rick Cantu, Detmer is returning to BYU following a stint as the head football coach at St. Andrew's High School.

"In addition to his coordinator duties, Detmer is expected to coach and mentor BYU's quarterbacks, including freshman starter Tanner Mangum", Zunel writes.

Detmer set 63 NCAA passing records during his career at BYU but has never been a coach at the college level. At the very least, the Cougars' offense should become a virtual must-see in 2016 and beyond. "I feel it is the right time to make a move and jump in head first".

Sitake was a fullback at BYU before embarking on a coaching profession in that saw him manning the Oregon State defensive coordinator position until taking the Cougars' job.

"We are excited to announce Kalani Sitake as our new head football coach and welcome back one of our own", Holmoe said. "I'm excited to get to work and continue the incredible legacy of BYU football".

At Utah State, Tuiaki served as the running backs coach and special teams and recruiting coordinator from 2009-11.
