According to the Wall Street Journal, it grossed $57 million combined in the United States and Canada overnight. The movie racked up more than $100 million in pre-sales by its Thursday night opening. The global opening record of $316.1 million and worldwide record of $524.9, both held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, are well within striking distance for the well-oiled Star Wars machine following record debuts in numerous global countries.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" surpassed the previous record by over $19 million (16.6 million euros) industry monitor Rentrak said Sunday.

Disney purchased "Star Wars" producer Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012 and is betting that big-budget films can draw customers even as viewers gravitate to online streaming and mobile viewing and theater attendance declines.

The projections from Walt Disney Co late Friday indicated the film could eclipse the $208.8 million record set by dinosaur adventure film "Jurassic World" in June. The film, which carries a production cost of at least $200 million, opened in almost all other foreign markets Friday.
