Kentucky hires Gran, Hinshaw as offensive assistant coaches

Eddie Gran was hired as Kentucky's new offensive coordinator Tuesday replacing Shannon Dawson

Kentucky hired new co-offensive coordinators Monday, Eddie Gran and Darin Hinshaw, both from Cincinnati. United Kingdom assistant Chad Scott, who coached running backs in each of the last three season, will now coach the United Kingdom wide receivers.

Hinshaw, a former record-setting quarterback at UCF, joins the Kentucky staff after serving on the Cincinnati coaching staff since 2013. With his coaching resume, which includes stops at Auburn, Florida State, Ole Miss, and Tennessee, Gran appears to be a very strong fit at UK.

Gran's coaching career began at his alma mater California Lutheran, where he played four seasons as a wide receiver.

Cincinnati's Eddie Gran officially was hired Tuesday as Kentucky's "head coach of the offense". This past season, Cincy ranked No. 4 nationally in passing offense (373 yards per game), No. 5 in total offense (559 yards per game) and No. 24 in scoring offense (36.1 ppg). He also started the year with the most passing yards in a three-game span in UT's storied history.

He had an immediate impact at Cincinnati, guiding a record-setting offense in 2013, as the Bearcats led the American Athletic Conference in total offense (472.1) and rushing offense (168.3) with the offense totaling a school-record 6,137 yards. The two coaches served as assistants on Jimbo Fisher's Florida State staff from 2010-12. Gran left Florida State in 2013 to join Tommy Tuberville's staff at Cincinnati.

While teaming with Stoops on the Florida State coaching staff, Gran served as associate head coach, running backs coach and special teams coordinator, helping lead the Seminoles to their first Atlantic Coast Conference Championship since 2005, first 11-win season since 2000 and ninth Orange Bowl appearance in 2012.

Kentucky parted ways with offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson after the season.

Kentucky averaged less than 210 passing yards per game in 2015. United Kingdom quarterbacks completed 54.9 percent of their passes for 2,512 yards, 10 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

That note about Gran being in sole control of the offense is the real story. Stoops has repeatedly called for a more successful power-run game in his tenure at UK. Gran has only coached running backs at each of his last six jobs, so Hinshaw will take over the quarterback coaching duties that Dawson also held. The former Central Florida quarterback previously coached three years at Tennessee, including 2012 as the Volunteers' recruiting coordinator.

Hinshaw will be faced with a challenging depth issue after the transfers of Patrick Towles and Reese Phillips.

Drew Barker is the only returning scholarship quarterback on the Wildcats' roster.
