Viewers of this year's MST3K Turkey Day marathon were greeted by creator Joel Hodgson launching a Kickstarter campaign to revive "Mystery Science Theater 3000" as a crowd-funded television series.

The campaign has already blown past its first three goals of $2 million, $3.3 million and $4.4 million, which means Hodgson and his crew will film nine full-length episodes.

Nostalgia is in the air thanks to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it's benefitted the massive built-in fanbase for Mystery Science Theater 3000. In total the series ran for 11 seasons, consisting of 197 episodes and one feature-length film until it was canceled in 1999.

In addition to the cameos, MST3K will get a full 12-episode order if the team completes its fundraising goal.

"I personally was on-hand in Atlanta at a live event for the telethon with new host Jonah Ray, aka "Jonah Heston", as he will be known on the show".

Even though the characters aren't ironed out yet, Hodgson even teases that maybe there's a possibility that EGOT victor Bobby Lopez (Frozen) could write a new duet for Felicia Day and Neil Patrick Harris, which by itself would make certain portions of the internet squeal with excitement.

"I think, beyond a doubt, this is the weirdest (Christmas movie) that we've done", Murphy said, "primarily because it's hard to call it an actual movie because it really doesn't have what you'd call a traditional plot or storyline". The new MST3K reboot, on the other hand, has raised $5,764,229 from over 48,000 backers on Kickstarter and another $600,000 outside of Kickstarter.

Jerry Seinfeld, Mark Hamill, and Community star Joel McHale confirmed on Twitter that they'll be making guest appearances on the new season of the rebooted comedy cult classic.

The Kickstarter promises twelve new episodes of the series, some of which will include cameos from celebrities and more.
